A Reflection of 2020

January 05, 2021

What a year to remember, or not?ย  No one could have predicted the curve balls that 2020 threw at us but with the uncertainty and darkness also came with resilience and hope.ย  The way the pandemic and the call for action with Black Lives Matter โœŠ๐ŸฝโœŠ๐ŸพโœŠ๐Ÿฟ turned the world upside down, collectively we also witnessed communities come together with courage and compassion. ย

2020 will definitely go down in the books as a powerful year for women in sport. History was made throughout the year in areas of equality, inclusivity and diversity and it is a cause to celebrate some of these firsts.

๐Ÿˆ Katie Sowers, became the first openly gay female coach for an NFL team in the Super Bowl when the San Francisco 49ers faced the Kansas City Chiefs in February. ๐Ÿˆ

โšพ Kim Ng, is the first female General Manager in MLB history when the Miami Marlins hired her in November.ย  She is also believed to be the first female GM for any professional menโ€™s sport team in North America.ย  Oh, did we mention sheโ€™s also Asian. โšพ

๐Ÿˆ Dany Garcia, the ex-wife to the Rock one of our favorite humans became the first female to own a professional sports league when she along with Dwane Johnson and a private equity group bought the XFL. ๐Ÿˆ

๐Ÿ€ Jeanie Buss, is the first female owner of an NBA Championship when the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA Finals. ๐Ÿ€

๐ŸŽพ Naomi Osaka, won her second US Open title in September and became the first Asian player, man or woman, to ever win three career Grand Slam titles. ๐ŸŽพ

๐Ÿˆ Sarah Fuller, became the first woman to play in a Power 5 collegiate football game when she stepped in as a kicker for Vanderbilt in November. ๐Ÿˆ

We cannot ignore the pain and suffering that so many have faced over this past year but we also cannot ignore the epic strides ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธthat we have made in the world of women in sport.ย  We know this momentum will continue to move forward and weโ€™re so excited to be present at a time where we can witness the drive for change in adversity. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ
